Environmental and Social Responsibilty
Protecting the environment and communities in which the Group operates continues to be of paramount importance. We are convinced that maintaining high levels of economic, environmental and social performance contributes to increased shareholder value and maintains and enhances our "social licence to operate within our host communities".
No emissions in excess of regulatory limits have been reported at the Pokrovskiy mine and no instances of non-compliance have been identified by the Russian regulatory authorities at the mine. The ongoing equity investment from the International Finance Corporation (IFC) also provides technical support and regular independent reviews of the Company's environmental and social performance.
We aspire to improve our environmental and social performance on an ongoing basis and are committed to managing our operations to ensure the safety and security of our employees, contractors, neighbouring communities and our host environment. Our Sustainability Strategy is designed to build on our existing compliance with Russian regulatory requirements and to improve our environmental, health and safety and social performance through the ongoing implementation of international good practice. Specifically, this means that we will continue the implementation of IFC Performance Standards; move towards fulfilment of the Sustainability Reporting Guidelines of the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) and bring operations into compliance with the International Council of Mining and Metals (ICMM) Sustainable Development Principles and manage its operations in accordance with World Gold Council (WGC) recomendations.
The Group published its first Sustainability Report in 2007, in which it set out its Plan for Sustainability Management and Performance (the Sustainability Plan) for the remainder of the year. Since then, the Group has moved towards the fulfilment of this plan, details of which can be found in its second Sustainability Report which was published in May 2008. The Group's latest Sustainability Report was published as part of the Group's 2008 Annual Report.
